During the week of Aug. 5-11, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for DUI. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Hilo, Puna and South Kohala, three each.
So far this year, there have been 594 DUI arrests compared to 589 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.85%.
There have been 605 major crashes so far this year, compared to 523 during the same time last year, an increase of 15.7%.
To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared to 10 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 110%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
